[Spoofed Email Damage Surging] A Single Email Can Cripple a Company
Spoofed Emails Exploited in National Crisis — Over 120 Victims in One Attack In December of last year, amid the chaos caused by the “Martial Law Crisis,” spoofed emails were widely distributed to government and public sector workers. Disguised under the subject line “Disclosure of Martial Law Documents by Counterintelligence,” the emails pretended to share classified updates but actually contained malicious attachments. North Korea is suspected to be behind the attack, which led to over 120 individuals having their personal information stolen. Spoofed emails are fraudulent messages that impersonate trusted contacts—such as acquaintances, business partners, public institutions, or well-known brands—to deceive recipients into giving up sensitive data or money. For companies, ransomware infections—malware that encrypts files and demands payment—are a major threat. These emails often carry deceptive subject lines like “From the National Tax Service” or “Your inbox is full,” or exploit current events such as “Martial Law Documents,” making them easy to fall for. Many victims are tricked by curiosity or routine and unknowingly open the emails, resulting in irreversible damage. A recent case in January involved phishing emails impersonating Seoul city officials. Hackers pretended to be municipal employees inquiring about the possibility of a remote meeting regarding anti-North Korea leaflet activities. Malicious code was embedded in the attached file. Although Seoul City issued a statement confirming that it does not handle public participation via private email and advised deletion, the scale of the damage remains unclear. Another major spoofing incident occurred in May 2023 when hackers impersonated major portals Naver and Kakao. According to the National Intelligence Service, attackers disguised their sender names to look like official portals and used subject lines such as “Login from a new environment” or “Account restricted” to bait recipients. In a widely known case dubbed the “Fake Lawmaker Email,” mass emails were sent between April and October 2022, resulting in 49 recipients having their documents and contact lists stolen.

[Spoofed Email Damage Surging] Completely blocks threats by tracing the sender… 'RealMail
RealMail by RealSecu: Zero-Trust Email Security Solution Blocking Spoofing at the Source ‘RealMail’, developed by RealSecu, is a Zero-Trust-based email security solution that blocks spoofed or forged emails by verifying the sender’s server. It traces the sender using SMTP response codes and international standard authentication technologies, detecting and blocking spoofed emails with unclear origins. Its most notable feature is its whitelist-based approach, which overcomes the limitations of traditional blacklist-reliant email security systems. If the sender information displayed matches the actual server details, the email is considered legitimate and allowed through. If there’s a mismatch, the system identifies it as spoofed or forged and blocks it. RealMail maintains a whitelist database of verified senders and origins, continuously updating trace data of sent emails to improve verification and blocking accuracy over time. In addition to spoofed and forged emails, RealMail also blocks various types of malicious emails. It incorporates RealSecu’s patented Social Engineering Email Attack Detection Technology, which helps prevent chained attacks that begin with email and extend to phone calls, software, or malware. Social engineering email attacks go beyond simple impersonation, often involving multi-layered spoofing via trusted-looking accounts, phone calls, and fake websites, making them difficult to detect with conventional security systems. RealSecu has proven its technological excellence by receiving a TI-3 (Technology Innovation level 3) rating from Korea Enterprise Data’s Technology Credit Bureau (TCB). At the end of last year, the company made its first overseas expansion by supplying RealMail to a local company in Vietnam. Earlier this year, RealMail was designated an ‘Excellent Product’ by the Public Procurement Service of Korea. RealSecu also holds a Security Function Certificate issued by the National Intelligence Service and was awarded a commendation from the Minister of Science and ICT. It has registered 11 patents related to email security, with two additional applications currently in progress.
